Confusão

The qualities of the Portuguese reach their maximum effectiveness in situations of confusion. Our talents for resourcefulness, for improvisation, for invention, are only used to absolute advantage when confusion reigns. 

In our history we see that it was only in times of great confusion that we were able to do the job. Not otherwise.

There are a few words that help explain Portuguese culture. One of them is saudade, a word that’s considered to be untranslatable but the closest interpretation is a feeling of longing. You can feel saudade for anything: a different time, a person, a relationship you once had. You can even feel saudade for something that hasn’t happened yet.

Saudade is a useful word because it gives some insight into the slightly melancholy, poetic, and philosophical part of the Portuguese soul. It’s something that people mightn’t pick up on when they visit Portugal for the first time, but you become more familiar with it as you live here.

But an equally useful word is the verb “desenrascar,” again considered untranslatable but some translations include to wing it, to disentangle, or to come up with a workaround. It means to MacGyver or some up with a last-minute workaround for a situation, probably a situation that you’ve got yourself into.

MacGyver was a character from a TV show in the 1980s who would always find himself in a tough situation in each episode, usually where a nuclear bomb (or something of that magnitude) was about to go off. And in every episode, he would save the world at the very last minute, usually with one second to spare, resourcefully using something like a paperclip to stop the bomb.

According to the satirical Portuguese for Dummies blog, desenrascanço is used to “express an ability to solve a problem without having the knowledge or the adequate tools to do so, by use of imaginative resources or by applying knowledge to new situations…Desenrascanço, in fact, is the opposite of planning, but managing for the problem not becoming completely out of control and without solution.”

Living in Portugal, you’ll notice that people don’t always plan and often everything seems to be done in a rush at the very last minute. It works out, more or less, usually with a creative solution. All of the stress of not doing things correctly and doing things at the very last minute could have been avoided, but that’s just not the Portuguese way. Portugal is, after all, a nation of desenrascados.

The script “Before Sunrise” was inspired by a meeting that the director, Linklater, had. It happened in Philadelphia, in a toy store, in 1989. He was 29 years old and Amy had around 20. They spent a night together "from midnight to six in the morning [...] walking by There, flirting”.

After releasing the first film, he hoped that she would recognize the story and be looking for it (which is what happens in the second film of the trilogy). Only she never showed up. They never spoke again. Entramos na nova era da fotografia

A câmara agora proposta por Bjørn Karmann não tem objetiva, tem um sensor de espaço e de localização, ligados a uma "inteligência artificial" que gera a imagem. Segundo o autor: "As AI models are increasingly becoming conscious, it will be hard to imagine how they might see our physical world. The camera offers a way of experiencing the world around us, one that is not limited to visual perception alone. [Providing deeper insight] into the essence of a moment through the perspective of other intelligences." A lição mais invisível desta máquina fotográfica sem objectiva não é sobre inteligência artificial mas sobre a fotografia. Esta ainda é tida como algo de autêntico ou de verdadeiro. A luz a passar pela objectiva e a ser registada por um material sensível são vistos como uma última trincheira na defesa de uma percepção pura, não construída e não simulada. O que esta máquina «cega» mostra é a arbitrariedade do dispositivo fotográfico. Mostra o que tem de construção e de simulação.

As objectivas fotográficas mais comuns foram escolhidas porque delas resultavam imagens que se assemelhavam às produzidas pela perspectiva linear desenvolvida durante o renascimento. Podemos especular o que seria a disciplina da fotografia sem a invenção da perspectiva linear. 

Talvez se tornassem dominantes os dispositivos de tilt shift, que deslocam a objectiva enquanto registam a foto. As pessoas e edifícios parece que ficam miniaturizadas, assemelhando-se um pouco às pinturas de Bosch ou Brueghel. O Tilt Shift mostra o que poderia ser talvez uma fotografia medieval. Ou então, mantendo-nos no campo da especulação contrafactual, imagine-se que nos primeiros tempos da fotografia só se tinham desenvolvidos produtos químicos que registravam a gama dos infravermelhos. A fotografia seria então Termografia. Imagine-se imagens nocturnas de corpos e objectos quentes.

Voltando ao nosso universo depois desta incursão por fotografias alternativas torna-se visível a artificialidade do dispositivo fotográfico, o seu carácter de construção cultural. Percebemos por exemplo como a fotografia não é neutra mas foi afinada para reproduzir corpos brancos. Percebemos que a fotografia não corresponde exactamente ao espectro do que um humano vê, nem em termos de gama de tons, de enquadramento, ou de cor. Nos últimos anos, houve um movimento bastante interessante e politicamente crucial para desconstruir a fotografia à luz (perdoem-me o trocadilho) da imagem digital. Um livro muito interessante é o "Forget Photography", de Andrew Dewdney.
